Blueprints, September 2011

Next Meeting: Tuesday, September 27th

We had two great meetings in August.  The first week, on the 4th, at Joann Dossett’s
house, was “meet the teacher” Gloria“Mimi” Winer, the evening before her workshop.
It was well attended and Gloria, as usual, was very entertaining and most generous with
her tips and techniques.  The second, on August 28th, at Sandy Feingold’s house, was also very
well attended.  We discussed all the different ways to design and make doll heads, from simple
to most complicated.  Everyone brought dolls to show and it was a good variety.

September’s meeting is back to our regular meeting time and place:  Tuesday, Sept. 27th,
at Joann Dossett’s at 6:30 p.m.  Joann’s address is 2871 Brant St. in San Diego.  Phone
is 619-299-4115.  At the request of those at the August meeting, Lois will do a hands-on,

---teaching how to needle-sculpt stuffed balls of nylon

pantyhose to make a variety of character faces.
She’ll also demonstrate how to make an open mouth with teeth
and tongue
from pantyhose.
October and November meetings will continue with hands-on doll making,
 emphasizing hairdos and then hats.

Patti Smith has challenged us to supply dolls for her table at the
Kaleidoscope Quilt Guild on Saturday, October 15th.  Her theme is
“Flowers”, but she welcomes cloth dolls not related to the theme.
Bring your doll(s) to the September meeting to give to Patti.
The quilt show is at the Lemon Grove Masonic Center, 2590 Main St., Lemon Grove, CA,  from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m.  It the 17th annual Kaleidoscope of Quilts Show, with over 100 quilts ……..and, our
dolls.  Free admission and free refreshments. Thank you, Patti, for inviting us.

Another quilt show:  the Fallbrook Quilt Guild presents “Hand-Crafted Treasures” on November 4-5th,
at the Fallbrook Presbyterian Church, 463 S. Stage Coach Ln., in Fallbrook.  Over 200 quilts
demonstrations, opportunity quilt, vendors, quilts for sale, food and beverages.
Admission is$7 for adults, $2 for children 3 to 12.  No strollers.

Stephanie Meyer has volunteered to be our new web-master.  Does anyone have the passwords to our
old web-site.  We do have the passwords for the blog that Kelly Riley set up before her husband became so ill.
Thank you, Stephanie, for pitching in.

There are other open positions on the board.  Consider following Stephanie’s example.
September is our usual membership renewal time.  Dues are still $25 per year.
Please give Sheila a check at the next meeting or mail to her:  Sheila Godfrey, 908 Morse St., Oceanside, CA 92054

There’s been very little feedback on finding a meeting place for regular month meetings.
If you find a place near you, you won’t have to drive far.  Do you all want to continue
with fourth Tuesday evenings, or want some other day/time?  Input, please.

Blueprints, August 2011

August, 2011

Next meeting, Tuesday, August 28th

Welcome Diane Shine, former member who has moved back to Escondido.

Next meeting:  Sandy Feingold has offered her home for the August meeting, in Carlsbad.  So southern members don’t have to drive so far at night, the meeting is changed to Sunday, August 28th, at 2 p.m.  Program will be about doll heads – 2 piece, 3 piece, 4 piece, 5 piece ----with or without a center seam, polymer, gourd, whatever you make doll heads out of.  Anyone carve apple heads or corn husk?  This continues our meetings on making dolls.  Last year we had programs on selecting patterns of different body types, choosing fabrics, cutting, sewing, stuffing and jointing. This year we’ve done polymer faces with Deb Tomcik, soft sculpting with Shelley and Gloria.  Several members have suggested now we learn about different ways to do features, hair and hats.  So for this August meeting bring all the heads you have, and tell us how you made them.

We had two great workshops this summer.  Shelley Hawkey taught us her method of face sculpting
and painting her adorable “bugs”, at her home July 23rd.  For those who missed this, Shelley’s
web site is, where you can get her new book, her patterns, and her DVD’s.

The other workshop was with Gloria “Mimi” Winer, held at the SewPro shop in Oceanside,
on August 5-7th.  We learned a great deal.  We are still working on it.  Some of us will finish the
doll, but all the techniques, sources, tools, tips, etc.,  were well worth the class by themselves.
Gloria is a fantastic teacher. Thanks to Barb Keeling for being assistant teacher, Joann Dossett
for housing and feeding Gloria, and the La Mesa members, Vivienne, Patty and Stephanie
for transporting her to and from class. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Patty Smith’s quilt guild is having a show in October.  She’s been asked to set up a doll show there.
Patty writes:   “Kaleidoscope quilt guild of Lemon Grove is having a quilt show. I was asked to show
some of my dolls and some of my friend’s dolls. Is any one interested in a small challenge?
How about a doll with a flower theme?  Or just letting me show one of your dolls.”
The quilt show is Saturday October 15, 2011, Lemon Grove Masonic Center 2590 Main Street
Lemon Grove Ca.     Patty Smith  619 466 4953
We haven’t had a doll challenge for awhile.  How about it?

For the past year we have been meeting in member’s homes, and sometimes at different times
and dates from our regular fourth Tuesday evening time.  Some members have expressed the
view we need to get back to a regular, preset time and place.  So who knows a place we can
meet and when?  Some members work daytimes and some on Saturdays, too.  Some members
don’t drive at night anymore. Some have tried and couldn’t find the home where the meeting was.
Many consider Saturday family day, or shopping and errand day and for others Sundays are filled.
WE NEED YOUR OPINION.  We are not eligible to use the San Diego recreation buildings,
as it’s required that 85% of our members live within the city limits.   Only 5 currently paid
members do so.  Others live in El Cajon, La Mesa, Bonita, Spring Valley, Solana Beach,
Carlsbad, Oceanside, Escondido, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Lake Elsinore, and Lynwood.
We are scattered and no one wants to drive long distances.  If we add all the people who are
receiving the Blueprints, but have not paid dues, we are scattered even more. We cannot use
the SewPro store in Clairemont anymore, either.  Some venues are available to non-profits, but
that means organizations registered with the state tax board as such.  We are not. We can pay a
small amount from the club treasury, but not $150 or more per meeting.  We have met in
churches in the past, giving a donation to them.  Nowadays, many want to rent their rooms,
as a staff member must be there to open, clean up and close.  The same goes for libraries,
schools, community rooms, senior halls and trailer park common buildings. We are growing
(7 new or renewing members this summer!)  So, your INPUT, PLEASE.  Come to this
August meeting and let’s talk about it.  Don’t be afraid that you will be asked to take a job.
Just come.  If you can’t come, contact Lois (760-438-3431,,
Sheila (760-757-4122, or Babs (619-275-6027,
 Thank you.
Also, if you are receiving the Blueprints and are no longer interested in IOLCC, please contact
Babs to be removed from the list.  Thank you again

June, 2011

Next Meeting: June 28th, 2871 Brant St., San Diego

Welcome two new members:  Dena Hornberger and Stephanie Meyer
We thank Patty Smith for hosting the May meeting in her home.  It was an interesting and fun experience.

Next meeting: Tuesday, June 28th at Joann Dossett’s house -- 2871 Brant St., San Diego, 6:30-9p.m.
(619-299-4115). She will be showing the DVD “Needle Model a Pretty Face” by Gloria Winer.  This will be a chance to preview (and work along, if you wish) making the head for her “High Priestess” workshop in August.  For those not attending the workshop, it will be educational, too.  Gloria has a unique, 2-layer method of needle-sculpting that makes a very realistic face. The inner head is solid, the outer layer is stretch fabric and you stuff between the layers to get the contours, and then stitch them in place. This DVD is almost 5 hours long and we won’t see it all, but, please, come on time so we can see a lot of it.

July’s meeting will be on Saturday, July 23rd, at 2 p.m.  Shelley Hawkey will host us at her home – 1718 Outer Drive, El Cajon.  Shelley will lead us through the way she needle-sculpts a face.  Shelley has a new book out: Beautiful Bugs.
Shelley will have kits made up for us, so we can work along with her.  These will be $10 and include a fully sewn unstuffed doll head, sculpting thread and needles, and pens for coloring the faces.  (Bring light and dark watercolor pencils in blue, brown or green for coloring the eyes) She can seat 12 up close, as a workshop, but others may attend and watch.  Shelley will have her books, and patterns for sale there, too.

There are still a few openings in Gloria Winer’s workshop on August 5-7.  This is 3 days of
intensive learning.  See the flyer for details and photos.  She won’t be on the West Coast
again soon, and this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity.  Members pay only $150 plus $30
for the kit (or $15 for the pattern and instructions, bring your own materials and tools)
Contact Lois Boncer (  to register.
